Orientation

The orientation is a very important period for a child preparing for the beginning of this new adventure: Kindergarten. Until a child has comfortably established a relationship with his classmates, teacher and new environment, we prefer the following steps occur to allow a smooth adjustment for the child.

  • A meeting between parents, child and teacher prior to the orientation period to talk about the child, his needs and the parents’ expectations from our program. This also serves as the first step in the teacher and the child getting to know one another.
  • The presence of a parent for the first week(s) of kindergarten so that the child can become comfortable with his new surroundings and yet still feel the reassurance of the presence of a parent. This also provides the parents with an opportunity to better understand what a typical day for their child will be like.
  • The gradual separation between child and parent during the first stays at kindergarten permits both parties to experience these difficult steps with more serenity. It is for this reason that parents and children remain at the kindergarten just for a few hours each day at the beginning.
  • As soon as the child has become familiar with the new environment, the mom or dad will leave the room for short periods of time until, gradually, they have reached the point of simply leaving the child all day.

Kindergarten and Family

The support of the family in our educational program is fundamental. For this reason we will offer a series of meetings between the parent and our education staff with the support of our didactic coordinator. Our goal is to maintain a continuous exchange of information and collaboration to aid the children in these precious formative years.

Typical Day

The important moments that make up a child’s day at day care are the entrance, morning snack, diaper changing and personal hygiene, activities, lunch, naptime, and pick up. Our typical day is structured in this way:

8,00
Drop off of the children until 9:15 a.m. The morning welcome is a moment in which parents and teachers can exchange information.
9,30
snack time, switching between bread and oil, fresh fruit, vegetables dipped in an oil, salt , yoghurt, raisins, and cookies. Snack is the beginning of our day. During snack we sit around the table, sing songs and read books.
10,30-12,00
We begin our activities; we start with singing songs in English, an important moment for the children. It is a fun way for them to begin speaking English. Every room offers the possibility of different activities; there is a room with many tactile materials (white and yellow flour, pasta, play dough etc. ), a room that encouarges mobility, a reading space, a dress up space, an art room, and a music room. Every activity is always a way to provide a hands on way for the children to learn English.
12,00
Lunch arrives and the children learn to stay at the table together with teacher, they also begin to use a spoon, fork and cup
12,00-13,00
First pick up for the children who do not eat lunch
12,45-14,00
Guided play time for the children who have eaten lunch. This is a time that the children can choose what they want to play while they wait for their parents.
13,00-14,00
Second pick up for the children who do not have naptime at the school while the others go to sleep
15,30-16,00
exchange and snack
16,00-16,30
Third pick up for the children who have eaten and had nap time

Pick up is a time in which the teacher can communicate how the day went.

Diet

Canadian Island offers a hot lunch that is made with all organic products and has been created by a dietician who knows the necessary dietary needs of children. Along with meat and beef, there is also eggs, cheese, fish and beans. The food is prepared with extra virgin olive oil. The vegetable broth is made with vegetables that are in season. The dough for the pizza is made with flour, oil, yeast, water and salt. All the vegetables and fruits used are fresh and seasonal. Nothing is fried, other methods of cooking are used (the food is baked, pan cooked, steamed, or boiled). The menus are created monthly to respect the seasonal changes and the availability of the vegetables. Sometimes we exchange a grain for another equivalent or another vegetable that is seasonal. One time a month there is a fruit salad. The menu respects the caloric needs, as well as the need for proteins, fats, and glucose of children from 1 to 3 years old.
